Meet the makers of the ‘West Cork’ podcast at the inaugural Cork Podcast Festival

The inaugural Cork Podcast Festival, presented by The Good Room in association with Cork Opera House, has announced the first event of the festival programme: ‘West Cork Podcast’, live at Cork Opera House, Saturday, October 12, 2019.

Sophie Toscan du Plantier was murdered days before Christmas in 1996, her broken body discovered at the edge of her property near the town of Schull in West Cork. The rest remains a mystery. Gripping, yet ever elusive, join the real-life hunt for answers with investigative journalist Sam Bungey and documentarian Jennifer Forde, creators of the popular true-crime podcast series.

West Cork, which Time Magazine named as one of it’s top 50 favourite podcasts, guides listeners through the brutal, unsolved murder and the tangled web of its investigation, while introducing an intricate cast of characters, a provocative prime suspect, and a recovering community whose story begs to be heard. Meet the makers and hear exclusive behind the scenes stories with Sam and Jennifer on stage at Cork Opera House.

Speaking about the event, Sam Bungey commented: “We’re so excited to be part of the first Cork Podcast Festival. It’s an honour to be invited back to Cork. After 22 years there has finally been a criminal trial over Sophie’s murder, but it was no ordinary trial and it’s not at all clear what it will lead to. We sat in the courtroom in Paris recently as Ian Bailey was convicted of the murder, in absentia. We’ll be talking about what that trial means, along with other developments, as we gather research for new episodes.”

Tickets will be in hot demand following the popular sold out event at the West Cork Literary Festival in 2018. Tickets €26.50 plus booking fee are on sale now from www.corkoperahouse.ie

There’s much more to be announced in the festival programme over the coming weeks. Expect a broad palette of talkers, thinkers and doers, covering everything from fact and fiction, stories and tales, sports to comedy, and beyond. Follow Cork Podcast Festival on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to keep up with the news.
